1. Ride bicycle if you can balance and control. Learn at a safe place not on main roads. While riding bicycle please take care the following
• Use the right size helmet
• Wear proper dress, so that the dress shouldn't hide the rear reflectors, not to trap into chain sprocket and you may fell down.
• Wear bright clothes during the day and a reflective vest at night. If you don't have a reflective vest, dress in colours that reflect the light from cars such as white or fluorescent green or wear bright shoes or belt
2. To control and balance you need to select a proper size of the bicycle to suit you. When you stand on the bicycle, there should be a gap of 2 inches from the bar as shown in the below figure.
3. Fix the reflectors in front, rear and on spokes so that you will be visible to the other road users during the night
4. While riding on main roads, ride completely on the left side or right side on the two lane road. If the road is with median, don't ride along the median it could be dangerous with the cars, buses and trucks. Don't try to cross in front of the vehicles and observe the traffic behind you.
5. At crowded places, respect the pedestrians, elders, and children. If required ring the bell and alert them.
6. Be alert always to reduce the speed or if required to stop.
7. Be careful at junctions; be visible to other road users coming in other directions.
8. Stop when the signal is red at junctions and move along with other traffic when the green light is on.
9. At junctions if you are going to left, keep left in advance or if you are going to right keep right in advance but don't try to criss-cross from one direction to other.
10. When turning left, if any bigger vehicle is turning left side don't try to turn along with that vehicle, keep away from the vehicle otherwise you may be trapped between vehicle and the kerb or fell down and vehicle may run over.
11. While turning or moving from one side to other side of the road give signal in advance and have look over shoulder then turn or move.
12. Don't ride the bicycle on footpath
13. At bus stops observe the passengers getting down or getting in and move carefully.
14. Except while signalling, always hold the handle bar with both hands.
15. While going ride in group, ride in rows with discipline. The formation of rows shall be according to the place available on the road otherwise form single rows.
16. Don't follow too closely behind the vehicles.
17. Don't keep luggage on handle bar, you may lose balance and my cause accident. When loading on rear carrier take precautions that it may not stuck in the rear sprocket or spokes.
18. While descending steep hill, control speed and go slow otherwise you may lose control over bicycle and become an accident.
19. Observe the road carefully according to your speed, there may be pot holes, ditches, sudden appearing of animals etc.
20. While passing parked vehicles, be alert for opening of doors, passengers getting down.
Making a left turn or right turn
21. Be careful while overtaking the vehicles at low speed.
22. Don't ride the bicycle in drunken state, may lose control and becomes an accident.
23. Always follow the traffic rules and signals.
24. While parking a bicycle, observe the following
a. Don't park at isolated places.
b. Park at cycle stands are designated places for cycles.
c. Not to obstruct, danger, inconvenience to others.
25. While turning right side, give signal in advance, look over the shoulder and when its safe ride to the middle of the road, when there is no traffic from the opposite direction turn right and ride on the left side.
26. Prescription drugs can cause you to feel drowsy and may slow your reaction time. Medicines that may affect your ability to ride safely include:
a. Some painkillers.
b. Some medicines for blood pressure, nausea, allergies, inflammation and fungal infections.
c. Tranquillisers, sedatives and sleeping pills.d. Some diet pills.
e. Some cold and flu medicines.
27. Avoid blind spots, blind spot is an area outside a motor vehicle that cannot be seen in the rear or side mirrors of the vehicle. When riding in traffic, it is important to increase your visibility by keeping away from motor vehicle blind spots.
28. Whenever you are on the road, do your best to make sure other drivers see you. You can do this by looking straight into their eyes. This is called making "eye contact." If you think they have not seen you, be on your guard. Slow down and be prepared to stop or get out of the way.
29. Carefully check for approaching trains. If there are no trains, do shoulders check for other vehicles. Cross tracks at an angle to be crossed perpendicularly, so that your wheels do not get caught.
30.Keep your eyes and ears open. Do not wear headphones. Look for signs and listen for the sounds of traffic or sirens.
